murmur collective

The murmur collective is the collaboration between photographers Dániel Perlaky and John J.B. Terrill. Through this project, they seek to promote a new æsthetic vision that distinguishes the often unnoticed elements in a larger functional system, slivers of natural beauty that exist in the everyday environment. Focus is turned on these pieces by isolating them from a comprehensive view of the systems of which they form a part.

Complete objects by nature absorb the unconscious attention of the individual, for it is only through understanding the interactions of entire objects that we can function in our environment. Thus in daily life, our vision of parts is mediated by our unconscious analysis of the whole. Consequently, a host of patches of beauty are dismissed by precognitive processes that concern themselves only with grosser observation. The art of the murmur collective seeks to free the subject from the connotative constraints imposed by knowledge of the subjects' greater function. Without the extraneous knowledge of the broader context of these pieces, the viewer is free to judge them purely for their æsthetic merit. In this fashion, the part is elevated from holding a supporting role in a meaningful system to becoming the only relevant unity, a subject in and of itself.

To date, this art movement draws heavily on the surroundings of cities in Texas such as Austin and San Antonio. Some of the richest environments have been small towns in West Texas, Kansas, and Florida. Nevertheless, the æsthetic bounty captured by the murmur collective is reflected everywhere. The collective hopes to share its vision and sensibilities through exhibitions at both art galleries and more populist forums.
